What to Expect During Your Newborn Session

1. We will start with sibling photos.

The newborn stage is short-lived which is why it’s so important to document this precious time while it’s here. Newborn sessions are taken between 1 - 3 weeks of age when your baby is still their sleepiest and most peaceful self. My newborn sessions are take in-home where you and baby can be most comfortable.

Below are some tidbits about what your newborn session may entail:

Blink and you’ll
miss it!

If your newborn has siblings, I will work to capture these images first. Siblings may eventually grow tired and want to tap out of the session. As this is usually the case, I recommend making sure big brother and/or sister is ready for their close-ups at the beginning of your session.

2. siblings will get a small gift.

Becoming a big brother or sister is a major life change. I will bring some treats for your little ones to congratulate them on becoming a big sibling, and as a ‘thank you’ for taking part in your session. This gift is usually a coloring book, but I will also bring some small snacks just in case. Fruit snacks and/or Goldfish are my go-tos, but I will always consult with you to ensure that providing a treat it okay, that there are no allergies to consider.

3. We will take breaks.

Newborns dictate their own schedules. I build time into my sessions so that you can nurse, change dirty diapers, or simply comfort your little one whenever needed. We will move at whatever pace works best for you and your child.

4. Don’t worry if your home is a little messy.

Life with a newborn can get messy! Please do not fret if your home feels cluttered or disorganized. I will assist with de-cluttering areas for your session if desired to ensure you receive beautiful images.

5. What should we wear?

The most common question I get from my clients is, “what do I wear!?” For baby, I recommend having a couple of outfit options because messy diapers can happen. I will bring a few simple swaddles but if you have any special outfits or swaddles you would like to incorporate within your photos, please let me know.

As for parents and siblings, since my newborn sessions are designed to document everyday life with your newborn, I recommend wearing something that:
1. Is comfortable.
2. Is lengthy enough to prevent any accidental body part reveals.

My biggest tip is to wear something that feels authentically you! But I also understand that choosing something you will be happy to look back upon can pack on some pressure. For that reason I have complied a longer list of tips for selecting wardrobe for your session. You can find it here.

I am also always available to provide curated guidance. If you have any questions about outfits you’re considering for your session, please reach out and I will gladly provide feedback.

6. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

My biggest tip is to come to your session with a care-free attitude. Everything is new for a newborn. They’re still getting into the groove of this thing called life and they may not cooperate the entire time. If this is the case, it’s 100% okay. My newborn sessions are structured to account for any restlessness that may occur, and we will work through any hiccups that may arise - whether it be a diaper blow-out, a sibling’s protest, or baby just wanting to be held by Mommy. It may require patience but we will get precious photos of your newest family addition.
