ready for a beautiful photo session experience?

not sure what to wear to your session? here is list of some of cecelia's biggest wardrobe tips.

Wardrobe Guide: What to Wear

For some people selecting wardrobe for a photo session can be thrilling. For others? Anxiety inducing. No matter how comfortable you are outfitting your family, it cannot be denied: wardrobe is incredibly important when it comes to taking photographs. You never want to look back on your photos and think to yourself, “why did we wear THAT!?” To avoid these sentiments, below are some tips for selecting wardrobe that you will love now and for years to come.

Don't stress over your wardrobe!

  • Clothes with logos, words, or characters
  • Clothing with high-contrast patterns (especially thin stripes)
  • Clothing with bold geometric designs
  • Stark white clothing - it can cast an eerie glow and wash you out. TIP: Instead opt for off-white, ivory, or beige clothing
  • Primarily black clothing - you’ll become lost in the pictures!
  • Neon colored clothing - this will age your photos
  • Super short clothing, such as minidresses and mini skirts
  • Athletic sneakers or house shoes - I 100% support bringing these types of shoes if you’ve got an outdoor session and have a short trek to your photo spot, but be sure to bring another pair of shoes to wear in your images
  • Crazy or mismatched socks
  • Digital wristwatches
  • Hair-ties around your wrist
  • Little girl’s dresses or skirts without bloomers or stockings

Clothing to Consider:

  • Coordinate your color scheme. Not everyone has to wear the same color! Instead concentrate on finding colors that go well together.
  • Be thoughtful about patterns. Instead, consider wearing an outfit with texture, such as lace or a corduroy
  • Wear seasonally appropriate clothing. For example, if you're taking autumn photos, wear clothing you would typically wear during cooler seasons.
  • Think about comfort. Find clothing that not only looks great, but feels great to wear too! I.e. soft fabrics that fit well, and shoes that are easy to walk in.
  • Don't forget to plan your hair, makeup, and nails.
  • Do you wear glasses? Light will reflect off you lenses, which may mean that your eyes will not be visible in every picture. If you need to or would like to wear glasses at your session, we can always take some pictures with your glasses and some without.

Clothing to Avoid:

Plan and try on your outfits at least one week before your session. There’s nothing more stressful than putting your wardrobe together the night before and realizing an article of clothing isn’t flattering or doesn’t fit. Avoid the anxiety by planning ahead so that if something isn’t quite right, you’ll have more than enough time to find an outfit alternative.

Build your wardrobe around a single outfit, such as mom’s or your child’s. As odd as it sounds, it will make selecting wardrobe for the rest of the family much easier. It can help guide you in selecting your color story and the general feel you want to convey in your images.

Pack an extra outfit. This is especially important if your session includes babies or children. Every parent knows - kids can sometimes find themselves in unexpected, messy predicaments. An extra outfit can help ease stress if your little one does end up with a stain on their clothes.

Pack at Photo Session bag. Your photo session bag should contain a number of items that could be helpful during your shoot, including makeup and a hairbrush for touch-ups in between shots and snacks for children, if applicable.
